BIOGRAPHY

ENGLISH

“The sensitivity and accuracy with which she presents lyrical passages with airy lightness is breathtaking. In the Andante, one and the other's heart might even have skipped a beat as she sensitively let the melody, which then developed almost majestically, resound from the initial repeated notes. Her precise and very fine touch characterised the entire evening in the most exhilarating way, with sparkling runs and striking bass lines flowing from her fingers with such effortless ease that humour was always peeking around the corner.” Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, 4/6/2024

Mariam Batsashvili gained international recognition at the 2014 Franz Liszt Piano Competition in Utrecht. Her musicianship seems to connect directly with the listener’s heart, and her sound palette, thoughtful interpretations and stupendous touch delight her audiences.

As a BBC New Generation Artist, she made important debuts at the Cheltenham Festival, with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and at the BBC Proms. As an ECHO “Rising Star” soloist she performed in the most significant concert halls throughout Europe. Since then her appearances with orchestras expanded to include the Rotterdam Philharmonic, the Dutch Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, amongst many others. Today she is a regular and welcome guest at leading international festivals and music venues in the UK, across Europe and throughout Asia.

Highlights of the 2024/25 season include returns to the Wigmore Hall and Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie; debuts at the Heidelberger Frühling and with the Hallé Orchestra and their chief conductor Kahchun Wong performing Liszt’s Piano Concerto No.1; a recital tour across Germany, Belgium, UK, Lithuania and Netherlands; and the release of a new album on the Warner Classics label.

Born 1993 in Tbilisi, Mariam Batsashvili first studied with Natalia Natsvlishvili before continuing at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar with Professor Grigory Gruzman. In 2011 she won First Prize at the International Franz Liszt Competition for Young Pianists in Weimar, and received the prestigious Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli Award in 2015.

Her determination to share and pass on the valuable techniques she received from her teachers to the next generation led her to a creative use of social media: each week she records a one minute video highlighting a specific approach for a specific problem, without using any words or explanation other than what can be seen and heard on the keyboard. This innovative approach has proven widely popular, reaching and inspiring 75,000 piano students  to date.

Mariam Batsashvili is an official Yamaha Artist and records exclusively for the Warner Classics Label.
